Adding a daily dose of pistachios to your diet may help with symptoms of erectile dysfunction according to a recent study by the International Journal of Impotence Research: The Journal of Sexual Medicine.
The Turkish researchers asked participants to consume 1 cup (100 grams) of pistachios every day for three weeks. Sexual desire, erectile and orgasmic function and overall sexual satisfaction improved for the men following the study. Ultrasounds showed that penile blood flow increased by 22 percent. The pistachios also positively affected the subjects’ cholesterol levels, which has been studied in relation to erectile dysfunction in the past.
Lead researcher Mustafa Aldemir of the Atatürk Teaching and Research Hospital in Turkey stated that “pistachio nuts are relatively high in the non-essential amino acid arginine, which appears to maintain flexible arteries and to enhance blood flow by boosting nitric oxide, a compound that relaxes blood vessels.”
